Drop by Pittsburgh Glass Center for a quick introduction to glassmaking without needing to book ahead. In just 20 minutes or less, you and your child can create either a paperweight or a blown glass ornament with guidance from experienced artists. The whole experience costs $55 per person. This is designed for families new to glassmaking—no prior experience needed, and kids ages 5 and up can participate with an adult. Simply show up and sign in at the Front Desk; seating is limited to 6 spots per hour and can fill up fast, so arriving early is a good idea. Keep in mind that finished pieces need about 5 days to cool completely before you can pick them up. The glassmaking area does get warm since it uses 2,000-degree molten glass, but the activity wraps up quickly. The center recommends wearing lightweight, natural-fiber clothing and suggests bringing a water bottle to stay comfortable. Check their calendar before your visit, as this drop-in program isn't available on certain special dates.
