Your family can drop by Pittsburgh Glass Center and try glassmaking with zero pressure or advance planning. You'll have about 20 minutes to create either a glass paperweight or a blown glass ornament, working alongside experienced artists who'll guide you through the process. The finished piece costs $55 per person. Kids ages 5 and up can participate with an adult present—no experience necessary. Just show up, sign in at the front desk, and grab one of the 6 available spots each hour (they tend to fill quickly). One thing to know: your creation will need about five days to cool before you can take it home, though shipping can be arranged for an extra fee. The hot glass environment is warm but manageable since your time there is brief. It's a perfect way to sample what glassmaking feels like if you're curious but not ready to commit to a full class.
