THE OLD ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL AND MUSEUM-FREE

Step back in time at this fascinating local museum housed within a historic building completed in 1886. Designed by renowned Boston architect H.H. Richardson, the jail operated until 1995 and was later renovated and repurposed. Today, you can explore a preserved section of the original cell blocks and learn about this important piece of Pittsburgh history from knowledgeable guides on hand to share stories and context. The museum is completely free to visit and welcomes families on the first and third Mondays of each month (excluding court holidays). Drop by anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at your own pace. The location is in Downtown Pittsburgh within the Family Court Building—enter through the main Ross Street entrance and proceed through security screening to find the museum.
