THE OLD ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL AND MUSEUM-FREE

Explore a fascinating piece of Pittsburgh history at this free museum, housed within a beautifully restored 1886 building designed by renowned Boston architect H.H. Richardson. The museum preserves and displays a restored section of the original jail's cell blocks, offering visitors a window into the building's significant past. This is an excellent outing for families interested in local history and architecture. Visits happen on a drop-in basis—just arrive during the open window and explore at your own pace. Note that the museum operates only on the first and third Mondays of each month (excluding court holidays), and you'll need to enter through the main entrance of the Family Court Building and pass through a security checkpoint to access the museum. Photography is not permitted inside. There's no admission fee, making this a budget-friendly educational experience for all ages.
