THE OLD ALLEGHENY COUNTY JAIL AND MUSEUM-FREE

Step back in time at this unique local museum housed within a historic building completed in 1886. Knowledgeable guides are on hand to share the fascinating history of what was once the Allegheny County Jail before it closed in 1995. The museum preserves a portion of the original cell blocks, offering visitors a tangible connection to this important chapter of Pittsburgh's past. Admission is completely free, making it an affordable outing for curious families. Visits happen on a rotating schedule—the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month (excluding court holidays)—during a two-and-a-half-hour window from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Just note that you'll need to pass through a security checkpoint when entering the Family Court Building. Photography isn't permitted inside the museum. This experience works well for older children and teens interested in local history, architecture, or how communities preserve their heritage.
