The Cabin Faced West Workshop

This three-hour workshop brings Jean Fritz's historical fiction novel to life for third through fifth graders. Before attending, students need to read *The Cabin Faced West* and will receive a study guide to help them prepare. During the session, kids explore key literary concepts like historical fiction and figurative language while learning about 1790s frontier Pennsylvania geography. The hands-on experience includes a tour of an actual log cabin, period-appropriate games from the 18th century, replica artifacts to examine, and interactive activities that make history tangible. A frontier-style lunch featuring johnny cakes with homemade butter and maple syrup, seasonal fruit, and milk gives children a taste of what settlers ate. Each participant takes home a log cabin building kit as a keepsake. The workshop accommodates up to 20 students and costs $25 per child.
