Sensory Friendly Time

The National Aviary offers a specially designed experience for children and families with sensory processing sensitivities. During this two-hour visit, your family can explore the aviary in a calmer environment while engaging with hands-on activities. You'll have the chance to touch biofacts like eggs and feathers, participate in a sensory-friendly version of Passport to Parks (presented by AAA Travel at 11 am), and enjoy interactive play spaces including a Draw Alive station. The aviary also provides sensory bags from KultureCity, available to borrow at no extra cost, which include items such as headphones and fidget toys to help with comfort during your visit. Before you arrive, you can review a sensory guide that describes the sights, sounds, and climate of different habitat areas—helpful for planning what to expect. A sensory table is also available to explore at your own pace. Since spaces are limited, advance registration is required for this event. This is a wonderful opportunity for families seeking a more accommodating way to experience the aviary's attractions.
