Kids Club: Maria Tallchief
Learn about Maria Tallchief, America's first prima ballerina, through activities and crafts.
Your child will discover the remarkable story of Maria Tallchief, a groundbreaking figure in dance history. During this hour-long program at the library's Main location, kids will learn what it means to be a prima ballerina—the highest-ranking female dancer in a ballet company—and explore how Tallchief became the first prima ballerina in America and the first Native American to achieve this distinction. Her inspiring journey of breaking barriers while honoring her heritage makes for a meaningful introduction to an important historical figure.
This program is designed for school-age children in grades K–5 and fits into the library's Native American and Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month celebration. It combines learning with hands-on activities, so kids leave with both knowledge and memories. The session runs one hour, giving families a manageable outing at a familiar community space. Contact the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh directly if you have questions about what to bring or expect.
