Blacksmithing Basics: Hooks & Hairpins

Your family can dive into the world of metalworking at this hands-on three-hour workshop at the historic Carrie Blast Furnaces. Led by experienced bladesmith Jared Ondovchik, participants will learn foundational blacksmithing techniques and work with real steel and traditional tools. By the end of the session, each person takes home a handmade steel hook or hairpin they've forged themselves—a tangible reminder of their creative work. The workshop costs $90 per person and accommodates up to 16 participants, so advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Come prepared: wear clothes that can get dirty, bring sensible closed-toe shoes (no sandals or heels), and dress for the weather since the workshop space isn't temperature controlled. The site is a former industrial area with uneven grounds, but handicapped parking and an ADA-compliant ramp to the workshop are available. Basic facilities like portable restrooms and hand-washing stations are on-site, though food isn't offered.
